The Palestinian Call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions — Yiddish Translation

by members of Yidishistn Mit Palestine

Starting in 2022, a small group has translated the Palestinian Call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions into Yiddish, adding our language to the ten versions already available (Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Slovak, Spanish, Russian, and Turkish).

Translation requires close reading, deeper engagement, and study. We wanted to do that as Yiddishists, with other Yiddishists, and to offer that to the Yiddish world with this text. We wanted to wrestle with all 490 (English) words in this call to action in order to deepen our understanding of this text, twenty years after its drafting in 2005, and to embolden more Yiddishist spaces to directly address the demands of this Palestinian call for justice and invitation to active solidarity.

The act of translation must imagine the existence of a reader or readership: an audience for the ideas you are moving into another language. It must also allow for the envisioning of a readership that does not yet exist, asking if translation can create new readers where there were none before.

We wondered how translating this text, particularly into Yiddish, might allow readers to respond differently and more effectively to the call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions. Could a Yiddish translation enable conversations about BDS, whether among individuals or within organizations? Will these conversations lead to concrete acts of solidarity?

Today, it is 794 days (and 77 years) into the most blatantly genocidal period of the Zionist colonization of Palestine, and 20 years since the BDS Call was first released.  The organizing in response to the Call over the past two decades has achieved meaningful victories, and deeply changed the landscape of Palestine solidarity work. With that work ongoing, and the Israeli state’s continued assault on Palestinians despite this winter’s nominal ceasefire, it feels particularly important for our Yiddish and Jewish communities to have this translation in our hands.

This is a time when most Yiddishist institutions have silenced voices for Palestine solidarity, putting many participants, workers, and organizers at odds with their own values in order to stay involved in important Yiddish spaces; and others have applauded the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.  In this context, we hope our translation’s invocation of a Yiddishist anti-Zionist readership can be a contribution to the rising tide of anti-Zionism in our Jewish communities over the past two decades, which has grown with the cultivation of diasporic Jewish cultures. We see it as one of many efforts insisting on a diasporism that is explicit in its anti-Zionism, moving past “ceasefire” to collective liberation, all the way to the decolonization of “land back,” and a safety that doesn’t depend on land thefts and expulsions.

It is also part of efforts to continually expand the spaces where we use mameloshn: keeping our language present in all areas of life as a vital presence, refusing to sign onto the fantasy of its decline or death, and treating Yiddish not only as a language to be translated out of, but also into.

We chose a collective approach to translation. Our group was purposefully mixed in our Yiddish fluency and our relationships to the language, including seasoned translators and new learners.  We worked in pairs and trios, using a version of the traditional khevrusa approach to study, to create different versions of each part of the Call for BDS to be discussed and woven together. We moved at the pace of our capacity and sought out mentorship and support from many corners of Yiddishland.

We worked with the English of the Call, an international English that utilizes the language of international law and human rights reporting. The Yiddish we developed together is somewhere between formal and colloquial, striving to honor the context of the Call when it was written. It is not an attempt to reproduce a “pure” past version of the language, or to mimic the hasidic Yiddishes which are currently the most widely spoken (as we are not from those communities)  – we hope that it is a contemporary Yiddish, speaking from and to our mixed and ever-multilingual lineages and lives.

This process of methodical and relational collective translation models how we hope the text can be used by others:

We offer it to Yiddish classes and leyen-krayzn as a learning tool: Read it alongside versions in other languages and see how the emphases change! Debate our choice of words and phrases! Discuss, af yidish, vi azoy m’ken kemfn far palestíne mit di dozike strategiyes, oder mit anderere!

We offer it to our fellow cultural workers as a resource: Draw on it for a broadsheet, a flier, a poster, a banner!  Set it to music!  Make it into an agitprop performance!  Make the versions in Ladino, Juhuri, and other Jewish languages that should live alongside our work!

We offer it to the Jewish left: Read it in khevrusa or in a larger group!  Use it as a starting point for a conversation about the – far from simple – relationship between the anti-Zionism of solidarity with Palestine and the anti-Zionism of diasporic cultural revitalization!

And, above all, we offer it to all those struggling for the liberation of Palestine.  Moving these words into the language we have embraced as a source of connection between past and future has helped us keep them present and tangible for us as we organize, agitate, educate, and act. And even more, this act of translation has helped us keep the goal behind these words burning brightly in our hearts: not just the Call’s demands, but the future of liberation they gesture towards, from the river to the sea, funem taykh bizn yam.
